The five figures in this painting represent five moments that many women experience on the breast cancer journey, uncertainty, fear, waiting, resilience and, ultimately, hope.

They have no faces because they could be anyone: a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend… or you.

The central figure, reaching towards the light, reflects the artist’s own journey as a breast cancer survivor. Each year, as she hears the words, “You are still in remission,” the dark clouds of uncertainty give way to light, bringing renewed relief, gratitude and joy. Her outstretched arms become a quiet celebration of life made possible through early detection, a life to be embraced fully, with hope and purpose.

The words, “I am alive because of early detection,” are the heart of this painting. They are both a personal truth and a gentle reminder that early detection saves lives.
